It has been a while since my last post. I have been busy getting to know the local non-governmental organization in which I work at as well as adjusting to the everyday life in here. After living in Nepal for more than a month now I can tell that my understanding of the culture is way better than before, even though there still is a lot to learn for me.The culture and religion play an important role of the everyday lives of Nepali people and I have begun to really enjoy the constant celebrations. The culture is at the same time so joyful and interesting but it also has such deep and traditional roots. As I have mentioned already, Nepali people are very kind and helpful but at the same time the caste based discrimination, as well as the gender based discrimination still exist in here. The attitudes and believes that lie behind the unequal treatment based on a caste or gender have a major impact on how the society works.
So, this been said, I can tell a little about the Non-governmental organization where I work. It is called UCEP and it stands for Underpriviledged Childrens Educational Programs. The organization is involved in different projects in order to help the with children, youth and adults who are in most voulnerable situations. UCEP is managing a technical and vocational school called Sano Thimi Technical School, which provides educations and accommodation for youth from disadvantaged background. After graduating from the school the organization helps the students to find a job or to start a business of their own. This way the outcome is as sustainable as possible since the education ensures skills that are needed in the labor markets. UCEP is also managing a juvenile correctional home which provides a home and education for young people in conflict with law. In the juvenile correctional home the children are in a a safe and child friendly environment. As you can see the organization it self is involved in many different projects and it takes time to fully understand everything especially in a completely different kind of context. I am mainly working in helping to improve the quality of the education but before doing anything it's very crucial to observe how the existing pedagogy works.

The earthquake has also had an impact on the everyday lives of the people in here. Many lost there homes or family members and school buildings were destroyed. Due to the earthquake UCEP has also been working together with Finn Church Aid in building temporary learning spaces and child friendly spaces for the children. These temporary learning spaces in the pictures below are made of bambu. They were very carefully designed and built in a time frame that allowed the children to get back to school as soon as possible. After the earthquakes, one of the key element in the rebuilding process has been the psycho-social aspect. There are on going projects that aims to help the schools to recognize the children that need psycho-social counselling and support. This work is very important and it has turned out to be very valuable.

Viime kirjoittelusta on jo vierähtänyt aikaa. Uuteen asuinympäristöön sekä uuteen työhön totuttelu on vienyt paljon enemmän aikaa ja energiaa kuin kuvittelin. Nepalissa uskonto ja kulttuuri ovat todella tärkeässä roolissa ihmisten arjessa ja juhlia ja pyhäpäiviä tuntuu olevan viikottain. Juhlakulttuuri on täällä erittäin värikästä ja seremoniat suuria ja näyttäviä. Juuri viime viikolla täällä juhlittiin Uutta Vuotta, kun vuosi vaihtui Nepalin kalenterin mukaisesti vuoteen 2073. Lisäksi eri kaupungeissa on juhlittu vaihtuvin viikoin nyt "Jatraa", mutta en oikeastaan edes ymmärrä, mistä siinä juhlassa on kyse. Lisäksi hevoskilpailu päivä oli äskettäin ja työpaikan virkistys piknik toteutettiin iloisesti tanssin ja laulun merkeissä. Nepalilaisten perheiden sekä koko suvun kesken on myös juhlia jatkuvasti, mutta niistä en tässä nyt lähde sen enempää kertomaan, koska juhlatkin ovat erilaisia riippuen etnisestä taustasta, kastista, uskonnosta yms. Sen sijaan kerron työpaikastani tässä hieman enemmän.
Työni paikallisessa järjestössä on siis alkanut ja voin todeta, että eniten totuttelua on vaatinut Nepalilainen työkulttuuri. On vaikea edes selittää, miten eri tavalla kaikki toimii täällä Suomeen verrattuna, mutta lähtökohtaisesti asiat etenevät hyvin hitaasti ja suunnitteleminen on todella hankalaa, joskus jopa mahdotonta. Haastetta työntekoon sekä perehtymiseen lisää myös se, että olen ainoa ei-Nepalilainen täällä työpaikalla. Nepalin kieli ei siis luonnistu itseltäni, jolloin perehtyminen on tavallista hitaampaa. Jotta työn tulos olisi mahdollisimman järkevä ja kestävä, on olennaista, että ymmärrän kunnolla sen kulttuurin ja kontekstin, missä työskentelen.
Järjestö, jossa työskentelen, on siis nimeltään UCEP. Sen tavoite on auttaa heikoimmissa asemassa olevia lapsia, nuoria ja aikuisia saamaan koulutus ja sitä kautta elinkeino. Järjestö hallinnoi sekä ammatillista koulua, että nuorisorikollisille suunnattua kotia. Nämä molemmat tarjoavat koulutuksen, majoituksen sekä päivittäiset ateriat. UCEP on myös mukana lukuisissa erilaisissa projekteissa, kuten maanjäristyksen tuhoamien koulujen kunnostamisessa sekä koulujen sanitaation parantamisessa. Itse olen mukana etenkin koulutuksen laadun kehttämisessä, jossa tarkoituksena on parantaa opettajien pedagogista osaamista. Tähän mennessä tekemäni havainnoinnin perusteella olen huomannut, että opettajilla täällä ei välttämättä ole minkäänlaista kasvatustieteellistä tai pedagogista koulutusta. Lisäksi oppilaat sekä opettajat kaikki tulevat hyvin erilaisista taustoista, jolloin opettamisen lähtökohdat voivat olla todella haastavia. Alkuvaiheen havainnointi sekä huolellinen suunnittelu ovat kuitenkin ehdottoman tärkeitä hankkeen onnistumisen kannalta. Suomalaisesta individualistisesta työotteesta poiketen, täällä kaikki tehdään tiimityöskentelynä. On hienoa, että opin itsekin täällä työskennellessäni paljon uutta ja hyöty on siis ehdottomasti molemminpuolista!
